

Jonathan Hamel-Nunes
Head of Traffic Management — City of Montreal
Mr. Jonathan Hamel-Nunes is an electrical engineer and graduate of the École de
technologie supérieure (2008), with expertise in intelligent transportation systems, traffic
signal operations, automation, telecommunications, and electrical distribution networks.
His career spans engineering consulting firms and governmental and municipal
organizations, where he has consistently applied his technical and managerial expertise
for the benefit of the City of Montréal.
As Manager of the Innovation and Mobility Management Department, Mr. Hamel-Nunes
has demonstrated strong strategic leadership with both local and international partners.
He has established rigorous project quality processes and introduced innovative
approaches to project development and delivery.
Under his leadership, the department is responsible for major initiatives, including
automated shuttle projects, 5G deployment, bus preferential measures and TSP,
centralized traffic signal and surveillance camera management, predictive artificial
intelligence, and electric mobility. He also realised the deployment of 2,000
electric-vehicle charging stations and the electrification of BIXI stations. The
department is additionally responsible for designing mobility patterns that prioritize
vulnerable road users and for implementing large-scale cycling infrastructure projects.
Dedicated to advancing mobility services for residents, Mr. Hamel-Nunes aims to
contribute the department’s technical expertise to the ITS Canada community.
